""... do you think when I die, people will still remember me...?"
Elvis Presley to Charlie Hodge between songs during a 1970's concert.
August 16th 2010, 33 years on, it is quite hard to believe that Elvis Presley is dead. Obviously even more so disbelieving in contemplating now, I believe than if I had heard it on the airwaves of the many news broadcasts that afternoon in 1977. Though I was not born when Elvis was alive, I have been a fan for the past fourteen years and often find it hard to believe that he is dead, considering he appears to be alive through his millions of fans around the world. Watching recently the Aloha From Hawaii performance, recorded 27 years ago, it feeling as dramatic and electrifying now more than ever. While treated to another arrival of Elvis The Concert 2010 last March in Dublin, the capacity of such never ending loyalty of his fans, younger faces of new generations of them too, he just appears to have touched so many people.
While I regularly state, I do believe that towards the end of his life, his vocal ability was at its optimum of brilliance, as such recordings of Solitaire from the Jungle Room Sessions, or Bridge Over Troubled Water from the Spring Tours '77 release highlight just how brilliant and unique his voice was right to the end. While many critics have and continue to criticise his final years albeit his physical/vocal state, I cannot find any argument that can take from his incredible voice, that never failed right to the end. To quote the review of The New York Times of his 1972 Madison Square Garden performances "He looked like a prince from another planet", he was the only one in his class. There have been many contenders, many pretenders, but only ever one Elvis Presley.
During the month of August, in celebration of Elvis, and to mark this August 16th, ElvisOnLine invites fans to contribute their thoughts and comments as to what makes Elvis Presley so special to them.

Elvis' final vacation...
This beautiful picture of Elvis playing football was made during his vacation in Hawaii, March 1977. Elvis wanted to show the islands to his grilfriend Ginger Alden, so he planned a trip to the beautiful State of Hawaii. He arrived with a group of thirty people on March 4th 1977, they checked into the Hilton Rainbow Tower. After two days Elvis, Ginger, her sister and a couple of the guys moved to a beach house at Kailua on the west side of Oahu. Elvis and Hawaii go back a long way; He fell in love with the islands when he was first there in November 1957 and performed at the the Honolulu Stadium and at the Schofield Barracks in Pearl Harbor. In March 1961 Elvis flew again to Honolulu, to perform his first post-Army appearance (a charity fund-raiser at Bloch Arena to kick-start the struggling USS Arizona Memorial building fund) and the filming for his 8th movie; ?Blue Hawaii'. Four years later, on August 15th 1965, while filming ?Paradise, Hawaiian Style' in Hawaii, Elvis, Vernon and Colonel Parker visited the completed Memorial and layed a bell-shaped wreath there. A year later, on May 18th 1968, Elvis, Priscilla, Lisa Marie and Charlie Hodge, the Gambills and the Espositos flew to Hawaii and together they also visited the USS Arizona Memorial. On March 12th 1977 Elvis was supposed to visit the Memorial once again. But it was cancelled at the last minute because Elvis abruptly had to return to Memphis. He had gotten sand in his eye and Dr. Nick was concerned that he may have scratched his cornea, and suggests that he recuperate at home for a week before going on tour once again. All in all Elvis seemed to enjoy his vacation in the beautiful Hawaii, but sadly enough this would also be his last.

January 2010 marks 37 years since Elvis' legendary performance in Hawaii, Aloha From Hawaii. Argued as his best performance, and often not considered a TV special as such, it was TV history in the making. The first live TV broadcast via satellite, it was viewed by 1 billion or a 1/3 of the world population. To mark this very momentful performance, visit the Elvis Aloha Page now. Click here.
" ...To me, it's the number one show. Not only because it was a landmark, but because of being able to work with Elvis. We became fast friends until the day he died. He was such a gentleman. I mean, he was not only a superstar, he was a nice person"
Marty Pasetta - Director & Producer of Aloha From Hawaii

Sir Roger Reminisces...
While recently attending my second Unicef Black Tie event in support of this very worthy charity, I had another opportunity to meet again, the wonderful Sir Roger Moore. During the course of the evening, I took the opportunity in asking Sir Roger, his recollection of meeting Elvis Presley. In an intimate recollection, he shared the experience from his time in Holywood who Sir Roger would regularly attend Dorothy Squires performing on stage, with a then young Elvis Presley regularly in the audience. Elvis a big fan of Dorothy, would regularly request to go back stage where he met Sir Roger. Sir Roger reflecting how Elvis would always refer to him as 'Sir"...

Way On Down...
They are rare, and perhaps that's why we like them so much: unseen and unrelease pictures like thise. Although the shot was taken in black and white, Elvis can be seen wearing the Blue Swirl Suit, while going 'Way Down' during a live concert. We have no information about the girl, but we thought that the picture mattered most, so: enjoy!

Elvis Return Of A Prodigy
From the producers of "Plugged In & Geared Up" comes a fully remastered and editted Las Vegas show from 1969 entitled "Elvis - Return Of A Prodigy". It contains the August 3, 1969 Dinner Show, straight from the original ?69 reference mix. The CD will be released this August on the Gravel Road Import label. The show was originally released by the Fort Baxter import label in 1993 as "Opening Night"
From the press-release:
Facts: - The earliest known soundboard of 1969 to date; - Newly discovered ?69 audio; - The differences between the later released shows of end August 1969 will strike you.
"Elvis - The Return Of A Prodigy", will be released by Gravel Road Music in August!
This is the August 3, 1969 Dinner Show, straight from the original ?69 reference mix. It is completely remastered and edited. This is the earliest soundboard to date of Elvis first Las Vegas engagement in 1969. It's also only the sixth live performance he gave, the music is very different from the late August released live performances. This is to date the closest you can get to the opening show of July 31st, 1969
The liner notes are a review of somebody who actually was there, it will give you a very lively idea how it looked. The more than 50 photos of the same show (many in color) included will help you even more to imagine the first few shows of 1969.
As an bonus we included some interviews prior to the opening show and original radio spots of 1969.
We hope at Gravel Road Music that you all are just as excited as we are about this release cause it's a historical soundboard recording, placed in the right perspective.
Note:
The show itself was released by Fort Baxter in 1993 as "Opening Night" no edits were made at the time and an effect was placed on the audio to cover up the tape noise. Now it is upfront clear and very lively as a wild 69 show should be. For the ones who have "Opening night" or the copy from this show, this release will appear as if you hear it for the first time.

TAHOE UPDATE
Image Souce, Elvis.Com
News has just reached ElvisOnLine to advise that The Horizon Tahoe (Sahara Tahoe) will be closing permanently June 5, 2009. It had been projected for 2010 and it is unknown what the reason is for moving up the date. It's really sad because so many fans will never get the opportunity to see what a great setting Tahoe was for Elvis. More info as it becomes available.

Another Legend
Another legend of our time, and a personal fan myself, I had the privleage of meeting Sir Roger Moore yesterday evening, Jan 16th, in attendance of Ùnicef, Black Tie Gala Dinner & Casino Night, Honouring Special Guest Sir Roger Moore, Unicef Ambassador. Sir Roger, no stranger to our screen, attributed to many now legendary productions, most notablly James Bond 007 in seven movies, while also playing Simon Templer in The Saint and Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders with Tony Curtis. While having the opportunity to speak with Mr Moore on three occassions of the night, he did of course have the experience of meeting Elvis Presley. He recalls in his latest biography, "He came backstage and, being very nervous, introduced himself to me - as though I didn't know who he was. 'Hello, I'm Roger', I said. 'How are you, sir?' he asked. 'Lovely to meet you, sir.' He insisted on calling me 'sir' throughout our brief chat, and acted as though he was in awe of me. Him! In awe of me!...
Having met Joe Esposito last week and Roger Moore this week, I could not help feel somewhat in awe myself!!! Darren...
Joe Esposito Irish TV Interview...
In celebration of Elvis' 74th Birthday last week, Elvis' tour manager, confident and close friend, Joe Esposito, appeared on Irish television to do what was his first ever Irish interview, let alone TV appearance. Sharing his memories of his friend, click on the below link to national broadcaster's website for the complete interview. (clicking at 30 minutes into show, for where it begins). Joe Esposito was in Ireland to celebrate at the Elvis Birthday Charity Spectacular yesterday, January 11th, in aid of Senior Citizens of Bluebell Utd. AFC. Organsied by Mr John Kavanagh (President) of the Elvis Social Club (www.elvissocialclub.net), the night was a tremondous success packed full of entertainment. As always, it was to be memorable and most enjoyable and a credit to the hard work of Mr Kavanagh and Co. An article will follow of my memories of the night and meeting with Joe Esposito...

The Captured, Uncaptured...
In the later 1970's, Elvis unusually wore two jumpsuits at a now much discussed concert. Captured on stills, leading to its now fame, so did an 8MM camera. The original sound has been included which ellaborates on this now infamous incident.
Once in a while some very rare footage shows up on the internet. ElvisMatters member Kris Van Gisbergen spotted this news item, about Elvis's arrival in Huntsville on May 30th 1975. Both the landing of the Lisa Marie and the transport to the Hilton hotel were filmed (well, bits and pieces of it). Elvis didn't do an interview, but he had no objections to being filmed.

Christmas Elvis Duets Album...Yes?No?
NOV: ALERT!!!
Elvis, No 1 Dead Celebrity Earner 2008
The American magazine Forbes just published it's yearly
list of top earning dead celebrities. Elvis is still the number
one in this list with a whopping $52 million. That is more
than some of today's active entertainers. For example,
Madonna earned $40 million. Famous legends as Marilyn
Monroe and James Dean are among the steady names in
the list. New arrivals are actors that just passed away:
Heath Ledger and Paul Newman. Two years ago, Elvis lost
the number 1 position to Kurt Cobain, who's catalogue was
sold in 2006. His name does not appear on the list anymore.
